New ancestry data rules for local hires

Beginning January 1, 2027, cities and counties that collect ancestry or ethnic‑origin data for people they hire must add extra categories and counts for Black or African American groups defined in state law. This applies to all cities, including charter cities. The law stresses protecting privacy and handling data securely under existing privacy laws. Local agencies and school districts can seek state reimbursement for their costs if the Commission on State Mandates finds this is a state‑mandated cost.
