Clear heavy metal info on prenatal vitamins

Beginning January 1, 2027, brand owners must post, on one web page per lot, the name and level of each heavy metal, the Supplement Facts, and a short health statement. The page must be public for the product’s shelf life plus one month and must not require a UPC, lot number, or proof of purchase. It must include details to identify the product, like the name, UPC, size, and lot numbers, and a link to the FDA page on heavy metals. Any webpage that describes the product must show a prominent line that links to the test results. For items shipped to stores on or after January 1, 2027, the outer package must include a line that points to the web address with the required info. For items sold online and shipped to consumers on or after that date, the product page must include the same line with a live link. Starting January 1, 2030, it is illegal to sell or make prenatal vitamins in California if they lack these package or online statements.

Heavy metal testing for prenatal vitamins

Beginning January 1, 2027, makers of bulk or packaged prenatal vitamins sold in California must test a representative sample of each lot for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Tests must be done by a lab accredited under ISO/IEC 17025:2017, using methods as sensitive as FDA guidance, and the lab must prove it can measure each metal at 10 μg/kg with a z‑score within ±2. Makers and brand owners must give test results to a state agent when asked. It is unlawful to sell or make prenatal vitamins in California that do not follow these testing rules.
