4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.
If you are a new registrant and did not complete the Section 7583.45 course, you must finish 32 hours within six months of registration. At least 16 of those hours must be done within 30 days of registration. If you start work and cannot show a required training certificate, you must finish the required training within six months of your hire date. For the 32‑hour training, complete 16 hours within 30 days of hire and the rest within six months. Every year, you must also complete eight hours of skills review or practice.
The law requires you to finish a course on arrest and use of force within six months before you apply. One authorized provider must teach and certify the course for your application. Starting July 1, 2023, your application must list the provider’s name and license or certificate number, the instructor’s name, and the certificate serial number. It must state you finished the course within six months, include conviction disclosures, and show the application fee was paid.
Peace officers who completed a POST‑approved arrest and use‑of‑force course are exempt from these training rules. Federal qualified law enforcement officers under 18 U.S.C. 926B with an equivalent course are also exempt. Armored vehicle guards are exempt as well.
Trainings may be given and certified by a licensee for its own applicants and employees, certified training facilities, or bureau‑approved schools. The bureau approves instructors. Providers must issue a certificate after each course and follow bureau rules. Registrants must keep each certificate until their registration expires or is canceled. Employers must keep training records at their main office or branch and show them to the bureau on request. The bureau also creates a standard course and curriculum in consultation with POST.
