Wildfire grants follow wildlife-safe rules

The law defines environmentally sensitive vegetation management. It means lowering long-term wildfire risk while supporting native plants and wildlife. State agencies that fund these projects must consider adding clear rules to their grant guidelines. Examples include using integrated pest management; supporting native biodiversity; maximizing long‑term risk reduction; monitoring before, during, and after work; and using methods that mimic natural processes and maintain rare habitats. Agencies also time work to protect wildlife and curb invasive plants; minimize erosion; consult botanists and land experts; keep buffers near water; use prescribed grazing where it fits; avoid habitat type conversion; and avoid harm to rare or sensitive species in consultation with relevant agencies. The law defines type conversion as native plants being lost and nonnative plants taking over after disturbance; it is not removing some natives to make room for other native, underrepresented plants.
