Sesame is now a major food allergen in California. Ingredients with protein from milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, soy, or sesame count. Highly refined oils from these foods and federally exempt ingredients do not count. Beginning July 1, 2026, covered food facilities must give written allergen info for each menu item. They can put it on the menu or use a digital menu with a paper or other written option. The info can use common names or standard allergen icons. This rule does not cover prepackaged foods, compact mobile food operations, or nonpermanent food facilities.
The law does not require the state to reimburse local agencies or schools for costs from creating or changing crimes or infractions in this act. If the Commission on State Mandates finds other mandated costs, the state must reimburse under the Government Code. The law does not set a dollar amount.
