Stable college accreditation through 2029

The law keeps college accreditation stable for a set time. Any accreditor the U.S. Department of Education recognized on January 1, 2025 stays recognized in California through July 1, 2029, if it keeps operating the same way. Colleges and students who rely on that accreditation keep eligibility tied to it during this period. On January 1, 2030, updated definitions take effect. Public higher education is the community colleges, CSU, and UC. Independent colleges are nonpublic, nonprofit schools accredited by a Department-recognized agency. The law does not regulate or subsidize private education. The temporary recognition rule ends January 1, 2030.
