Colorado donors keep homelessness tax credit longer

The law extends Colorado’s homelessness donation tax credit through tax year 2030, rather than 2026. Taxpayers can claim 25% of qualifying donations of money or goods to approved nonprofits or approved projects they run. The credit is nonrefundable: it reduces tax owed but is not paid out as cash. Existing credit limits and exceptions remain. The tax-year window runs from January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2030. Separately, the law moves the statute’s repeal date from December 31, 2040, to December 31, 2044. It also requires a statement explaining the tax credit’s purpose and how its performance is measured. The law takes effect at 12:01 a.m. the day after the 90-day period following final legislative adjournment. That date is August 12, 2026, if adjournment occurs May 13, 2026. A referendum petition filed during that period delays the law until voters approve it at the November 2026 election and the governor officially declares the vote.
