Retired education directors keep pensions with limits

Colorado PERA service retirees can earn a board of cooperative services (BOCES) executive director’s salary without reducing their pensions. There is no limit on how long they work during a calendar year. A BOCES executive director is the person with executive authority over the board’s administration. The job must be with a qualifying school district, BOCES, or charter school in PERA’s school division. The employer must find a critical shortage of qualified directors and determine that the retiree’s skills or experience would help. Working for a PERA employer during the month retirement begins still triggers the applicable pension reduction. Retirees below full retirement age and service requirements must wait two years before returning to their last employer.

Education funding can go to cooperative boards

Local education providers can send some or all of their startup and sustain funding directly to cooperative services boards (BOCES). This changes who receives the money, not the total funding amount. BOCES that do not operate schools also count as local education providers for postsecondary and workforce readiness funding. The law takes effect immediately.
