Colorado restricts 3D gun and part making

Beginning July 1, 2026, Colorado bans knowingly making potentially working firearms or covered parts using 3D printers or computer-controlled milling machines. Similar devices are also covered. Covered parts include unfinished frames or receivers, large-capacity magazines, and rapid-fire devices—not all gun parts. A first offense is a class 1 misdemeanor; a second or later offense is a class 5 felony. Federally licensed firearm manufacturers are exempt. Accredited gunsmithing programs, their instructors, and their students are exempt when making items solely for instruction within the program. Nonworking or prop firearms, and parts that can make only those firearms, are excluded.

Colorado restricts sharing digital gun-making plans

Beginning July 1, 2026, the law bans knowingly offering to sell or distributing certain digital gun-making instructions, including online. The ban covers instructions usable for activities prohibited by Colorado's existing firearm law, C.R.S. § 18-12-111.5. It applies when the recipient is in Colorado and is not a federally licensed firearm manufacturer. Violations are civil infractions, not criminal offenses under this provision. Federally licensed manufacturers are exempt, as is sharing solely for instruction within accredited gunsmithing programs by their instructors, students, or institutions.
