Colorado pre-kindergarten children get school vision tests

The law adds school-year vision testing for all Colorado pre-kindergarten children. It also requires vision and hearing tests in kindergarten and grades 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9. Testing also covers children in comparable age groups referred for testing. Teachers, principals, or other qualified people authorized by the school district conduct the tests. Each school must keep test records, put individual results in each child's records, and notify parents or guardians of problems. Parents or guardians can exempt their child by objecting for religious or personal reasons. The law takes effect at 12:01 a.m. the day after 90 days have passed since the legislature's final adjournment. That date is August 12, 2026, if final adjournment occurs May 13, 2026. A referendum petition filed against all or part of the law within those 90 days delays the challenged provisions. Those provisions take effect only after voter approval at the November 2026 general election, on the governor's official vote-declaration date.
