Easier late-fee waivers for military members

Active-duty military owners serving outside Colorado when registration and grace periods end no longer need affidavits for late-fee waivers. They must show military orders or other evidence accepted by Colorado’s Department of Revenue. The existing rule bars driving on Colorado public highways after those periods end and before the vehicle is registered again. The department must notify owners of this restriction, and the waiver does not cover other vehicle taxes or fees. These changes cover fees due on or after the law’s effective date, scheduled for August 12, 2026, with a May 13 adjournment. The date follows the law’s 90-day post-adjournment rule and is delayed if a referendum petition is filed.

Easier vehicle tax breaks for military members

Military vehicle owners serving outside the United States no longer need signed affidavits for the existing $1 ownership tax and registration fee exemptions. Owners must still show military orders or other evidence accepted by Colorado’s Department of Revenue. The vehicle must remain off roadways while the reduced tax applies, and the department must explain this restriction. The existing registration fee exemption also bars vehicle use; violations remain a class B traffic infraction. These changes apply to taxes and fees due on or after the law’s effective date. The law takes effect at 12:01 a.m. the day after 90 days following the legislative session’s final adjournment. That date is August 12, 2026, if the session ends May 13, 2026. A referendum petition delays the law until voters approve it and the governor officially declares the 2026 general election results.
