New therapist license path requires extra hours

Colorado marriage and family therapist applicants need an accredited master’s or doctoral degree in that field, or an equivalent degree. For applications filed on or after March 1, 2027, the degree does not need to include a practicum or internship. Applicants using this path must complete 700 extra supervised clinical hours before getting a license. The base requirements include two years of practice after a master’s or one year after a doctorate, with at least 1,500 supervised face-to-face client hours. Applicants must also pay the required license application fees.

Remote supervision allowed for family therapist licenses

Colorado marriage and family therapist license applicants can receive required clinical supervision in person or remotely. This does not reduce the required face-to-face client hours. The law takes effect at 12:01 a.m., 90 days after final adjournment of the 2026 legislative session, on the following day. That date is August 12, 2026, if adjournment is May 13, unless a referendum petition changes the effective date. If a petition places the law on the November 2026 ballot, it takes effect only with voter approval, on the governor’s official declaration date.
