Colorado police must share firearm tracing data

By September 1, 2026, covered Colorado law enforcement agencies must register with the federal National Electronic Tracing System and join its shared-data feature. Covered agencies have original authority to investigate firearm crimes, including local police, sheriffs, campus police, town marshals, and special-district police. Registration exemptions cover the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and agencies with an existing partner that provides tracing and data-sharing access. Agencies must send information about recovered or confiscated firearms as soon as practical, within 90 days of recovery or confiscation. This covers crime-scene guns, guns tied to investigations or criminal cases, domestic-violence seizures or forfeitures, abandoned guns, and guns believed linked to crime. Reporting is not required for voluntarily relinquished guns or guns the agency determines are unrelated to criminal investigations or activity. These duties apply to agencies, not households.
