Child care centers avoid repeat playground inspections

Beginning July 1, 2026, covered child care centers must have playground facilities inspected annually. The Colorado Department of Early Childhood must accept valid certification, or a copy, from qualified playground safety inspectors. Accepted inspectors include individuals or groups licensed or certified through the National Recreation and Park Association or another nationally recognized playground safety organization, including a public health agency. The department cannot require another inspection when a satisfactory report was completed within the past 12 months.

Less duplicate oversight for school-based child care

Beginning July 1, 2026, centers serving only school-age children on school district, district charter, or institute charter school property can reuse satisfactory fire or radon inspection reports from the past 12 months. The Colorado Department of Early Childhood cannot require duplicate inspections within that period. The department can also accept proof that centers meet substantially similar Colorado Department of Education staff-training or space-per-child rules. Centers must still meet applicable federal grant minimums when education rules or monitoring fall short. The department must review its waiver and appeals processes at least annually.
