3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 0 costs, 3 mixed.
Bigger school zones and doubled penalties
The law sets school zones to include roads within 1,000 feet of a school boundary. State highways count only if CDOT, or a local government with CDOT approval, designates them. Existing zones between 200 and 1,000 feet stay in place unless changed. Local governments can shrink a zone after a public hearing, but never below 200 feet. They can also expand zones and, with the school board, sell bonds to pay for signs. Signs must mark the zone edges and say penalties and surcharges are doubled. These rules apply starting August 12, 2026.
School streets: 10 mph and walkers first
The law creates school streets next to school property, named by local governments. The top speed is 10 mph, and signs must be posted. Drivers must yield to people walking or biking, and cyclists or scooter users must yield to pedestrians. A city or county can close a school street to cars and suspend other traffic rules to protect people moving on foot or bike. Certain traffic-code sections do not apply on school streets. A street that connects to a state highway needs written CDOT approval to be a school street. These rules start August 12, 2026.
More camera enforcement near schools
The law defines a safe route to school as a road used by walkers or bikers to get to or from a nearby school, designated by a local government. Automated cameras can now ticket moving violations in school zones and on these safe routes. Cameras are also allowed to enforce red-light violations and drivers passing a stopped school bus with lights on. These changes take effect August 12, 2026.
