Schools get excess marijuana fund money

Beginning June 30, 2027, the State Treasurer transfers excess Marijuana Tax Cash Fund money to the State Public School Fund. The transfer happens each June 30 when the balance exceeds a two-part threshold. That threshold equals 15% of that year's appropriations from the fund, plus the amount lawmakers designate for that year's emergency reserve. Schools receive the full amount above this threshold. The amount varies each year, and the law sets no fixed household payment.

Local marijuana tax shares shift statewide

Colorado's retail marijuana tax receipts first enter the Old Age Pension Fund, then move to the General Fund. From July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, local governments receive 3.5%, down from 10%. Local shares depend on collections within cities, towns, and unincorporated county areas. During that year, the General Fund keeps 14.51% of the money left after local distributions. Beginning July 1, 2026, the separate local share ends. The new split is 14% for the General Fund, 73.17% for the Marijuana Tax Cash Fund, 11.33% for the State Public School Fund, and 1.5% for the Marijuana Cash Fund. These are government funding changes, not direct household payments.
