New rules for farm and ranch tax status

Beginning January 1, 2027, Colorado updates who counts as a farm or ranch for property taxes. A farm is land mainly used to grow products from the land to make money. A ranch is land mainly used to graze livestock for profit in a pasture-based operation, where animals regularly use open pasture and get most of their food by grazing. Livestock means domestic animals used for food, breeding, draft, or profit. County assessors use these tests; meeting them can qualify you for the agricultural class, and failing them can mean higher taxes.

When farm and ranch tax rules start

The law takes effect January 1, 2027. If a referendum petition is filed within 90 days after adjournment, voters decide in November 2026. If approved, it starts January 1, 2027 or when the Governor declares the vote, whichever is later. The rules apply to property tax years that start on or after the effective date.
