More healing help for tribal victims

Colorado's crime victim compensation program adds coverage for traditional Native American healing and burial costs. The person receiving these services must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. The loss must result from a victim's death or injury. Covered costs include counseling and healing by elders or spiritual healers, sweat lodge and smudging ceremonies, and reasonable related travel. Burial costs include clothing for the deceased, meals, traditional giveaway or gifting expenses, and child care during burial ceremonies. Gifts to people performing ceremonial services also qualify for reimbursement. The law takes effect at 12:01 a.m. the day after the 90-day period following final adjournment of Colorado's 2026 legislative session. That date is August 12, 2026, if the session ends May 13, 2026. A referendum petition requiring a vote delays the law until voters approve it at the November 2026 general election. In that case, it takes effect on the date the governor officially declares the vote.
