Coroners must disclose death-care business ties

Colorado county coroners must post written financial-interest notices on their official websites, where they are public records. Covered businesses include funeral homes, mortuaries, crematories, embalming services, and similar providers subject to the office’s oversight or official actions. Financial interests include ownership, employment, management, contracts, and other direct financial ties. Coroners cannot take part in official actions that directly and specifically affect a business in which they have a disclosed interest. Coroner offices must also publish annual totals of referrals of remains to death-care providers, without identifying deceased people or families. These duties add to existing state and federal ethics and disclosure rules. The scheduled start is August 12, 2026, assuming final legislative adjournment on May 13, 2026. A referendum petition filed within the allowed period delays the challenged provisions until voters approve them in November 2026. Following approval, those provisions take effect when the governor officially declares the election results.
