More protection order details for families

The protection order alert system includes whether an extreme risk protection order was issued, when that information is available. It also includes the date the order was served or service was attempted. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the state’s criminal justice information program must give required information to the responsible division. The division shares it with protected people, their immediate families, and other eligible people, within legal sharing limits. These changes take effect at 12:01 a.m. the day after the 90th day following the legislature’s final adjournment. That means August 12, 2026, for a May 13, 2026, adjournment. A referendum petition filed within those 90 days delays challenged provisions until voter approval in November 2026 and the governor’s official declaration.

Fewer required firearm application alerts

The protection order alert system no longer must report certain firearm purchase or transfer applications by restrained people. This covers completed, submitted applications showing the applicant cannot legally possess a firearm under state or federal law. The repeal removes a reporting requirement; it does not ban sharing this information. The change takes effect at 12:01 a.m. the day after the 90th day following the legislature’s final adjournment. That means August 12, 2026, for a May 13, 2026, adjournment. A referendum petition filed within those 90 days delays challenged provisions until voter approval in November 2026 and the governor’s official declaration.
