Denver charter staff gain retirement coverage

Beginning July 1, 2026, Colorado’s Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA) expands its Denver Public Schools retirement division. It includes Denver School of Science and Technology charter schools and charter schools contracting with the Denver school board. Future charter schools must have that board’s approval and a charter contract with it. Board-approved schools certified as Denver charter schools also count as division employers for transfers between PERA divisions. Public entities still need PERA board approval to affiliate; employer and member benefits and duties begin upon affiliation.

Science charter staff can buy retirement credit

Beginning July 1, 2026, PERA members at affiliated Denver School of Science and Technology charter schools can buy retirement service credit. There is no limit on the years worked at that school that they can buy. Members must finish the purchase before leaving employment there. For purchases over 10 years, they must finish or start installment payments within three years after July 1, 2026. Members pay for this credit; the law does not state the price or resulting benefit amount.

Denver school members gain retirement board vote

Beginning June 1, 2026, PERA’s board grows from 15 to 16 trustees and removes the former automatic Denver division representative. The Denver Public Schools Division elects a voting trustee through an election run by PERA. The trustee must be a current division member or retiree. The seat lasts only while Denver remains a separate PERA division. This changes representation, not retirement benefit amounts.
