Beginning May 29, 2025, Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station employees can seek board approval for paid startup roles. They can serve on a startup’s board or receive pay when it develops and commercializes their invention or discovery. Approval requires the Station to share in net proceeds and no active dispute over inventor shares or duties. Board policies must follow legal and ethical rules and match researcher rights and limits at Connecticut public universities and agencies. The law guarantees no startup pay. The Station owns inventions tied to employees’ duties, Station programs, or Station resources; employees must disclose them and transfer ownership. Employees must also help secure patents or licenses. Inventors who meet these duties share at least 20% of proceeds after costs, split among co-inventors; the board can increase that share. Subject to federal grant limits, the board controls Station proceeds for scientific research. Disputes go to agreed or contract-required arbitration, or court when arbitration is unavailable; the board can set rules and arrange arbitration.
