Beginning July 1, 2025, eligible service-connected veterans get priority admission at nursing homes contracted with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. These homes must admit eligible veterans without following the usual waiting-list order. Veterans must meet federal veterans' eligibility requirements and qualify for care at that home.
Beginning July 1, 2025, military-connected children get new protections in Connecticut public schools. Children arriving midyear because of a documented military transfer get help continuing comparable services under an existing individualized education program or Section 504 plan. School boards must transfer records and prior evaluations, conduct needed reevaluations, and hold the required planning meeting within 30 school days. After military documents show a move from town, children can stay through the school year while the member remains in service. Children in grade 11 can stay one additional school year under the same rule.
Beginning July 1, 2025, verified veterans applying at a one-day state Veterans Affairs assistance event get free license or ID renewals or duplicates. Those applying more than six months before expiration get a voucher for free renewal during the final six months. Veterans and service members can also seek repayment of a Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter membership charge paid to obtain a qualifying plate. The plate must have been issued on or after July 1, 2025; applicants must follow state Veterans Affairs application instructions. The agency must notify applicants of its decision within 60 days and reimburse approved claims.
Beginning January 1, 2026, Connecticut offers Borinqueneers plates honoring the Army's mostly Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment. Buyers pay $60 beyond regular registration: $15 covers plate costs, and $45 funds bilingual help for Connecticut veterans and service members. No extra renewal or transfer fee applies, and the plates are only for use as official registration plates. A separate state fund keeps unspent money and accepts private donations and other specified plate-fee proceeds. The state sends fund money quarterly to Hispanic-American Veterans of Connecticut, Inc., which must use it for bilingual services and assistance.
