Beginning October 1, 2025, Connecticut can license qualifying out-of-state marriage and family therapist associates without an exam. Applicants must hold an associate license or certification in another U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth. Connecticut's Department of Public Health must find that jurisdiction's standards equal to or higher than Connecticut's. Applicants must have no pending professional disciplinary action or unresolved complaint. They must pay the $125 initial application fee.
Beginning October 1, 2025, Connecticut ends an experience-based licensing route for some out-of-state marriage and family therapists. It covered therapists licensed or certified in U.S. states, territories, or commonwealths with standards below Connecticut's. They can no longer substitute three years of licensed or certified therapy work for supervised practicum and postgraduate experience requirements. Those experience requirements include 24 months of postgraduate work with at least 1,000 hours of direct client contact.
