Beginning July 1, 2025, the State Education Resource Center is excluded from the Teachers’ Retirement System employer definition for new hires. The center remains in the public-school definition for members hired before that date.
Beginning July 1, 2025, a designated survivor age 18 or older can choose the member’s accumulated contributions plus credited interest. This replaces both the basic survivor’s benefit and the lump-sum death benefit. Without a named beneficiary, contributions and interest go first to the surviving spouse. If there is no surviving spouse, surviving children receive equal shares; if there are no surviving children, the estate receives the money.
Beginning July 1, 2025, collective bargaining subsidies must reduce costs for retirement-system members, spouses, surviving spouses, or disabled members. School boards and the state must notify the Teachers’ Retirement Board at least 30 days before canceling coverage for nonpayment. This notice rule covers members, spouses, surviving spouses, and disabled dependents. Notice goes to the Retirement Board, not necessarily the household, and does not guarantee continued coverage.
Beginning July 1, 2025, the Teachers’ Retirement System medical committee must review every disability allowance application meeting statutory eligibility requirements. Review does not guarantee approval or a specific payment.
Beginning July 1, 2025, the commission’s executive director can no longer choose the Teachers’ Retirement System. The available choices are the state employees retirement system and the alternate retirement program for eligible higher-education employees.
Beginning July 1, 2025, Teachers’ Retirement System applications become final on the member’s retirement date. Members cannot change or withdraw their applications once that date arrives.
