Beginning in School Year 2026-2027, the Board offers governance training to all DC public charter school Boards of Trustees at no cost. Each trustee must complete an approved training every year. New trustees must finish an initial training within 90 days of election or appointment. The Board decides which topics are for first-time versus refresher training. Training covers academic accountability systems, hiring and evaluating school leaders, fiscal management, nonprofit and charter governance and fiduciary duties, legal obligations, and updates to laws. The Board may deliver training in any format that ensures access and effective participation. The Board coordinates with the Office of the State Superintendent as needed. The law applies once its costs are included in an approved budget and certified.
