More caregivers can give insulin and epinephrine

Beginning July 1, 2025, trained direct-support workers and clients’ relatives can give insulin in Florida group homes. They can calculate sliding-scale doses based on current blood sugar and inject insulin under the skin using pens or syringes. Training must come from a licensed registered, practical, or advanced practice nurse, doctor, or physician assistant. Homes must keep prescribed doses and training records, coordinate to prevent double doses, and set emergency procedures. Homes must certify approved caregivers and immediately stop anyone who fails to follow the training requirements or home policies. Qualifying unlicensed direct-service providers can also inject insulin and epinephrine under the skin using pens or similar self-use devices. Homes that follow the insulin requirements and their policies are protected from civil damages tied to authorized insulin administration. Workers and relatives who follow those requirements are protected from civil damages and civil or criminal penalties arising solely from that administration.
