Gwinnett County; State Court; provide eighth judge January 1, 2027 and ninth judge January 1, 2028

Gwinnett County State Court adds two judges

Gwinnett County’s State Court grows from seven to eight judges on January 1, 2027, and nine on January 1, 2028. The Governor appoints both new judges. The eighth judge can be appointed earlier but takes office January 1, 2027; the initial term ends December 31, 2028. The ninth judge can be appointed starting July 1, 2027, and takes office January 1, 2028. That initial term ends December 31, 2030, with service continuing until a successor is elected and qualified. Later judges are elected at the general election before each term ends and take office the following January 1. They serve four-year terms and remain until successors are elected and qualified. Existing judges keep their terms. Both new judges have the same powers and pay as the other judges, and any judge can hear any case. At the eighth judge’s request, the county may provide courtrooms, offices, equipment, supplies, and needed staff. The county must provide these resources for the ninth judge. These expenses are paid from the county treasury; the law sets no dollar amount.
