New tax break for West Point homeowners

The law creates a $10,000 exemption from a qualifying West Point home's assessed value, not a $10,000 tax refund. It starts with tax years beginning January 1, 2027, only with majority approval in the November 3, 2026 referendum. It covers city property taxes, including city bond payments, and adds to other city homestead exemptions. It does not reduce state, county, or school taxes. Residents must occupy a home that meets Georgia's homestead rules, with no more than five adjoining acres. You or your agent must apply to the city governing authority or its designee using city-provided forms. After the first proper filing, renewal is automatic while the home remains your homestead; you must report eligibility changes. The city must hold and pay for the referendum and certify the result to the Secretary of State. Without voter approval, or if the election is not held, the exemption never takes effect and the act is repealed January 1, 2027.
