Georgia beneficiaries can use insurance for funerals

Named beneficiaries can assign group term life insurance payments to cover a deceased Georgia retirement system member’s funeral costs. This covers members of the Employees’ Retirement System of Georgia, Georgia Legislative Retirement System, and Georgia Judicial Retirement System. Payments must come from the retired and vested inactive members trust fund or active members fund. The recipient must be a funeral director or embalmer licensed by Georgia’s State Board of Funeral Service. Covered costs include funeral ceremonies, transportation, embalming, cremation, and burial. Beneficiaries must sign the board’s assignment form and attach a notarized funeral contract copy and a death certificate copy. The State Employees’ Assurance Department pays as the contract directs, limited to the insurance amount owed to the beneficiary.
