Diplomas for terminally ill Georgia students

Georgia public high school students with a diagnosed terminal condition who receive end-of-life care can get diplomas through this process. A parent or guardian must send a written request to the local school superintendent before the student dies. The request must include medical provider records showing the student's end-of-life health status. Within 14 calendar days of receiving the request, the local school board must ask the state board to waive graduation-credit requirements. Once the state board approves, the local board must award the diploma, which can be awarded after the student's death. The state board must adopt rules or policies to ensure schools act promptly.
