Brooks County court users face technology fees

Brooks County's Magistrate Court can charge up to $10 for each civil case filed and add up to $10 to each fine. The chief magistrate sets the amounts, and the clerk can collect them. The clerk must keep this money in a separate account used only for the court's technology needs. Allowed uses include buying, leasing, installing, and maintaining computers, software, and other equipment, plus preserving and digitizing records for public access. The authority to charge these fees ends July 1, 2036. Any money left in the account remains dedicated to general Brooks County technology uses.
