Brooks County election board grows to five

Beginning January 1, 2027, the Brooks County Board of Elections and Registration has five members. Three members must be present for the board to conduct business. Each county commissioner appoints one eligible county voter, with approval by a majority of commissioners. Members serving when the law takes effect have terms ending December 31, 2026. Two initial appointees serve until December 31, 2029, and three serve until December 31, 2031. Later terms last four years. For vacancies caused by removal, death, resignation, or other reasons, commissioners use the departing member's appointment process. Replacements serve the rest of that term. The superior court clerk must receive notice of interim appointments and record and certify them like regular appointments.

Brooks County sets election staff hiring rules

Brooks County's election board can appoint an elections supervisor to manage its affairs. The supervisor cannot serve on the board. The board hires, directs, evaluates, disciplines, and can fire the supervisor. The supervisor can hire needed staff, including poll workers, subject to approval in the county's annual budget. The supervisor directs, evaluates, disciplines, and can fire those workers. The supervisor and staff are county employees for pay, benefits, sick leave, vacation, and other administrative matters under county policies.
