Local grants tied to airport rules

Local governments lose eligibility for Georgia's local maintenance and improvement grants if they fail to enact or enforce airport-area rules. The suspension lasts three years or until the government enacts or enforces the rules, whichever comes first. Once the government complies, suspended funds must be paid to it. This funding penalty applies to local governments, not household benefits.

New height limits near Georgia airports

By January 1, 2027, local airport sponsors must identify affected areas and notify the local governments responsible for them. These areas cover air, land, and water beneath federally defined airport safety surfaces. By July 1, 2027, those governments must adopt and enforce reasonable height limits after public notice and a hearing. Limits cover buildings, structures, and natural growth, protecting airport safety while restricting property use. Rules must meet federal standards in effect on January 1, 2026; Georgia's transportation department provides compliance help. Local governments can use existing zoning rules and permits or similar methods, and amend rules through the original adoption process. Before granting an exception that creates an airport obstruction, local governments must notify an airport sponsor. The sponsor must check for violations of airport-surface rules and is responsible for requesting an exception from those rules.
