City tax relief for Hampton homeowners

The law creates a full assessed-value exemption from Hampton city property taxes, including taxes that pay city bond debt. It covers tax years beginning January 1, 2027, but requires approval by more than half of votes cast. The required vote takes place November 3, 2026. To qualify, you must have continuously maintained your primary residence in Hampton for at least five years. Your property must qualify as a homestead and include no more than five connected acres. You or your agent must apply to the city or its designee using city-provided forms. No new application is needed if you previously applied for and received another Hampton city homestead exemption for at least five years. The exemption renews automatically while you remain eligible and occupy the property as your homestead. You must tell the city if you no longer qualify. It replaces other Hampton city homestead exemptions and does not reduce state, county, or school district taxes. Hampton pays election costs, and election officials must publish notice and certify results to the Secretary of State. If voters reject the measure or the required election is not held, the exemption never starts and the act is automatically repealed January 1, 2027.
