Covington homeowner tax relief requires voter approval

The law creates a full Covington city property tax exemption for qualifying residents’ homesteads, starting with tax years beginning January 1, 2027. It requires approval by more than 50% of votes cast in the November 3, 2026, city referendum. The exemption covers the home’s full assessed value, including city taxes for bond interest and repayment. It adds to existing city homestead exemptions but does not reduce state, county, or school district taxes. You or your agent must apply to the city or its designee. After approval, your exemption renews automatically each year while you continue living in the home as your homestead. You must notify the city if you become ineligible. Without voter approval or an election, the exemption never takes effect and is automatically repealed January 1, 2027. The city pays election costs, and a court can order compliance with the election requirement.
