New technology fee on Clarkesville court fines

The law allows Clarkesville Municipal Court’s clerk to add a technology fee to each criminal or quasi-criminal fine paid. The court’s judge sets the fee, capped at $10 per fine. The money can only cover technology needs for the court and city police department. Allowed costs include buying, leasing, maintaining, and installing computers, software, and equipment for case management, data storage, imaging, scanning, faxing, communications, projections, and printing. The money can also repay the city’s information technology department for services provided to the court or police department. The clerk and city’s chief financial officer must keep the money in a separate account, subject to audit by a city-approved auditor.
