New technology fees on Cornelia court fines

The law lets Cornelia Municipal Court add a technology fee to each criminal or similar, quasi-criminal fine it collects. The judge sets the fee, capped at $10 per fine, and the court clerk collects it. The money can only fund approved technology needs of the court and city police. Uses include buying, leasing, maintaining, and installing computers, software, and imaging, scanning, fax, communications, projection, and printing equipment. Police uses include body-worn and other cameras, drones, and 9-1-1 operations through the city's dedicated emergency call center. The money can also reimburse the city's information technology department for services to the court or police. The court clerk and city chief financial officer must keep the money in a separate account. The funds are subject to audit by an auditor approved by the city's governing authority.
