Bremen seniors: bigger exemption, new requirements

Beginning January 1, 2027, the law replaces Bremen’s $10,000 school tax exemption for income-limited seniors age 62+ with a $90,000 exemption. New applicants must be 65 by January 1 of the application year. They must have been district residents and property taxpayers for five straight years immediately before applying. The exemption removes up to $90,000 of a qualifying homestead’s assessed value from Bremen independent school district taxes, including school bond taxes. Value above $90,000 remains taxable; state, county, city, and county school district taxes are unchanged. This replaces other local-act Bremen school homestead exemptions but adds to exemptions under general state law. People who qualify under the old exemption receive the new exemption automatically; others must apply to Bremen or its designee. Renewal is automatic while the home remains their homestead and they remain eligible. Recipients must report lost eligibility, and Bremen must end the exemption when eligibility ends.
