Springfield voters decide redevelopment borrowing powers

The law requires Springfield, Georgia, to hold a redevelopment referendum on November 3, 2026. The ballot asks voters to approve all powers under Georgia’s Redevelopment Powers Law, including future amendments. Approval allows community redevelopment, tax allocation districts, redevelopment bonds, and related debt within state legal limits. These powers take effect immediately only if more than half of votes cast on the question are YES. If approval fails or the election is not conducted as required, the act is repealed on January 1, 2027. Election notices must appear in Effingham County’s official newspaper at least 90 days before voting, then weekly during the two weeks immediately before voting. Springfield pays election costs, and its election superintendent must certify results to Georgia’s Secretary of State. The law sets no specific household benefit, tax increase, funding amount, or bond limit.
