School bond tax break for Lee seniors

The law creates a homestead tax break for Lee County school district residents, subject to voter approval. Residents must be 67 or older by January 1 of the year they apply. The exemption covers the home's full assessed value for school district property taxes used to pay school bond interest and debt. It adds to existing exemptions, but does not cover other school taxes or state, county, municipal, or independent school district taxes. Homeowners must apply to the Lee County tax commissioner and provide age and other eligibility information. The commissioner must provide forms. Approval renews automatically while the home remains their homestead and they remain eligible; homeowners must report lost eligibility. The exemption starts January 1, 2027, only with approval from more than half the votes cast on November 3, 2026. Rejection or failure to hold the election as required triggers automatic repeal 365 days after the election date.

Lee schools pay for exemption vote

The Lee County school district pays for the November 3, 2026, vote on the senior homestead exemption. The law does not state the election cost. It requires election notices, ballot wording, and certification of the results. A court order can compel the election official to hold the required vote. The exemption section also requires a two-thirds vote in each legislative chamber to take effect.
