Ware County seniors get school tax relief

The law creates a full homestead exemption from Ware County school district property taxes, including school bond taxes. Residents must be 75 or older by January 1 of the tax year. The home must qualify as a homestead and can include up to five connected acres. State, county, municipal, and independent school district taxes remain unchanged. This exemption replaces, rather than adds to, other Ware County school district homestead exemptions. You or your agent must apply to the Ware County Tax Commissioner and provide information showing eligibility. No yearly application is needed while you keep living in the homestead; you must report losing eligibility. The exemption starts January 1, 2027, only with approval by more than half the votes cast in the district referendum. Without approval, the exemption provision is automatically repealed 365 days after the election. Ware County pays for the referendum.
