Kingsland lowers age for senior tax relief

The law lowers Kingsland’s qualifying age for senior home tax relief by three years, to 62. It exempts $25,000 of a qualifying home’s assessed value—not $25,000 of the tax bill. The exemption covers city property taxes, including taxes for bond debt, but not state or county taxes. The law takes effect July 1, 2026, but the exemption requires local voter approval. Kingsland must hold the vote on November 3, 2026. With approval from more than half of votes cast on the measure, relief starts January 1, 2027. It applies to tax years beginning on or after that date. Without approval or a properly conducted election, the exemption does not start. The act is then automatically repealed on the 365th calendar day after the election. Kingsland pays election costs, and notice must appear in Camden County’s official publication weekly for the two weeks before voting. The election superintendent must certify results to Georgia’s Secretary of State. Voters can ask a court to require the election on the specified date or the next legally allowed election date.
