Carroll County adds a State Court judge

Beginning July 1, 2025, the State Court of Carroll County has a chief judge and one more judge. The Governor appoints the first person to the new seat for a term from July 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026, and until a successor is elected and qualified. The successor is elected in the 2026 nonpartisan judicial election and starts a four‑year term on January 1, 2027. Future judges are elected at nonpartisan general elections without a nonpartisan primary, take office January 1, and serve four‑year terms until a successor is qualified. The judge in office on the effective date continues to serve the rest of their term.

Judge pay and staffing rules set

Each State Court judge in Carroll County is paid 90% of the Superior Court judge’s salary, not counting outside county supplements. Pay comes from county funds in equal monthly checks. Judges must work full time and may not practice law privately. Each judge may hire a secretary paid at least $14,750 a year, with higher pay allowed if the county approves. The county pays the secretary’s salary.
