New training for police and paramedics on dementia

The law requires the Georgia Public Safety Training Center to create and keep a course on at-risk adults. Police, emergency medical staff, and behavioral health co-responders can take it. It covers benefits trafficking, elder abuse and neglect, missing persons, and victim-centered, trauma-informed care. It also teaches how to recognize and talk with people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, avoid restraints, and contact caregivers when someone is found wandering or in an emergency. The Division of Aging Services helps design the course, and the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council approves the hours and curriculum.
