Medicaid expands monitor coverage, ends insulin-only eligibility

Georgia Medicaid covers continuous glucose monitors for eligible people with diabetes diagnosed by a treating practitioner. The law replaces the daily-insulin eligibility rule with gestational diabetes or a documented history of serious low blood sugar. The practitioner must confirm that the person or caregiver has enough training to use the monitor, evidenced by a prescription. The low-blood-sugar path requires documented events below 54 mg/dL (3.0 mmol/L). Repeated events must persist despite at least two attempts to change medicine or the diabetes treatment plan. Alternatively, one event must involve an altered mental or physical state requiring another person's help with treatment. The department must update coverage rules to match current care standards and use the most cost-effective benefit delivery channel.

Georgia Medicaid monitor coverage starts two years later

The law moves the required start of Georgia Medicaid continuous glucose monitor coverage from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2025. This delays the scheduled start by two years for eligible recipients.
