Georgia gift card protections and new penalties

Georgia law adds fraud protections for physical and digital gift cards usable at one store or multiple stores. With intent to defraud, taking or keeping cards or redemption information without the holder’s, issuer’s, or seller’s consent is theft. Tampering with cards or packaging with that intent is forgery; scheming to obtain cards or redemption information through lies is fraud. Using cards or redemption information obtained through these crimes to get money, goods, or anything of value is also theft. Each conviction carries 1 to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
