Beginning January 1, 2027, Georgia health plans must cover emergency ground ambulance transport requested by a first responder. First responders include fire departments, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, peace officers, and communications officers. These rules cover licensed ground ambulance services, not air ambulances. For covered out-of-network ambulance service, your copayment, coinsurance, or deductible cannot exceed the amount for similar in-network service. Once the provider receives payment under this law, you owe only that allowed share, not an extra bill.
New payment rules for ambulance providers
Beginning January 1, 2027, Georgia sets minimum payments for covered out-of-network ground ambulance services, excluding state healthcare plans from this rate rule. The minimum is the applicable contract rate or rate set by a county, municipality, special district, or authority. Without such a rate, the minimum is the lower of 325% of the Medicare ambulance rate or the provider’s billed charge. Insurers must pay providers directly within 30 days of receiving a claim with no defects or missing required documents—not send payment to patients. For other claims, insurers must acknowledge receipt in writing within 30 days and explain any full or partial denial, or list the specific information needed.
