Georgia license applicants must be at least 21, meet board application rules, and hold required national radiographer and assistant credentials. Applicants pay board-set fees; licenses last two years, and renewal requires continued certification and registration. Radiologist assistants are exempt from the general 40-hour training rule every two years, but the board may set separate requirements. Expired or inactive licenses can be restored after application, payment of restoration fees, and proof of fitness to practice. Qualifying military members avoid a lapsed renewal fee by applying and submitting satisfactory evidence within two years after service ends.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Georgia requires a state license to perform radiologist assistant work, subject to stated exceptions. Unlicensed people cannot use titles or signs suggesting they are licensed. Existing assistants can keep practicing by verifying Georgia employment on the law's effective date and applying for the appropriate license. Exceptions cover students training in general hospitals under direct radiologist supervision and work allowed under another Georgia professional license. Qualifying assistants performing duties in the armed forces, Public Health Service, or Department of Veterans Affairs are also exempt.
Qualified, licensed radiologist assistants can perform advanced imaging and related procedures under a radiologist's required supervision. Procedures requiring direct supervision need the radiologist on site. Noninvasive procedures can use general supervision unless the board restricts them; other procedures need board authorization. Assistants cannot interpret images, diagnose conditions, or prescribe medicines or treatments. The board sets practice rules consistent with federal supervision standards and may cap how many assistants one radiologist supervises.
