How Muscogee fills school board vacancies

The law sets clear rules for filling open Muscogee County school board seats. If a seat opens more than 90 days before the general election that comes right before the next full-term election for that seat, a special election is held on that same general election day. Until the winner takes office, the remaining board members pick a qualified person by majority vote to serve temporarily. If the seat opens 90 days or less before that earlier general election, the board appoints a qualified person to finish the term and no special election is held. Any appointee or special‑election winner must meet the same legal qualifications as a full‑term member. Special elections are held only in the area that normally elects the seat, must be called within 30 days of the vacancy, and follow Georgia’s Election Code.
